The Calgary Flames acquired goaltender Brian Elliott from
the St. Louis Blues in a draft day trade on Friday.
The Flames sent the Blues the 35th pick in the 2016
National Hockey League Draft. The trade was announced during the first round of
the draft at the First Niagara Center in Buffalo, New York.
Elliott, 31 years old, has one year remaining on his three-year
deal, has an annual salary of 2.5 million dollars. The ninth round pick, 231st
overall of the Ottawa Senators in the 2003 NHL Draft, was traded to the Colorado
Avalanche on February 18, 2011 for goaltender Craig Anderson.
The Blues then signed Elliott, to a one-year deal, prior to
the 2011-2012 season, where he has spent the past five seasons as the number
one netminder in St. Louis.
This past season Elliott helped the Blues to the Western Conference
Finals, putting up a 23-8-6 record with a .930 save percentage, and was tied
with Anaheim Ducks goalie John Gibson, with 2.07 goals against average. He
played 42 games during the 2015-2016 NHL season, splitting the time between the
pipes with Jake Allen.
During the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs, Elliott went 9-9 with
a 2.44 GAA and a .921 save percentage through 18 starts. In 323 career NHL
games, he has gone 165-99-32 with a 2.40 GAA and a .914 save percentage. In the
postseason he is 15-19 with a 2.49 GAA and a .911 save percentage in 37 games.
During this past season, the Flames went through four
goaltenders, as Kari Ramo started 37 games, Jonas Hiller had 23, Joni Ortio had
19 and Niklas Backstrom started three games.
The Blues will also receive a conditional third round pick
in the 2018 NHL Draft as part of the deal as well.
