Detroit Red Wings Resign Drew Miller to One Year Deal

The Detroit Red Wings resigned forward Drew Miller to a one-year deal on Monday.

Miller, 32, avoided going to unrestricted free agency on July 1st by resigning the one-year contract. He had missed the final 40 games of the past season, due to a torn meniscus, which he suffered on January 10, against the Anaheim Ducks.

After playing 190 games consecutive games over three seasons, knee and jaw injuries limited his playing time to 28 games during the 2015-2016 campaign. Miller said, “We settled on the one year because it gives me a chance to prove that my knee is there and ready to last a whole season, and then we will go from there. I am excited. I did not want to go to free agency.”

The six foot two, 210 pound forward has spent the past seven years with the Red Wings. He has scored 100 points in 449 games during his time in the Motor City.

A sixth round pick of the Ducks, in the 2003 National Hockey League Draft, has scored 57 goals and 58 assists, in 516 games, between the Ducks Red Wings and Tampa Bay Lightning.

In Other news:

The St. Louis Blues gave Kyle Brodziak, two more seasons in the Gateway City, as the two sides agreed on a deal worth 1.9 million-dollars over its term. Brodziak was a fixture in the Blues lineup during the 2015-2016 campaign, appearing in 76 games, as he scored seven goals and four assists.

During the Blues 20 playoff games he was able to add two more to his totals.

Prior to St. Louis, Brodziak was an effective scorer, putting up 38 goals in two seasons with the Minnesota Wild. Since then he has become a bottom six and solid checking forward for the Blues.
He was one of the Blues better shot blocking forwards during the past season, as well as having the fourth best faceoff winning percentage on the team. With the smaller stuff completed, general manager Doug Armstrong can now shift his focus to the club’s bigger decisions.

Team captain, David Backes is still unsigned as is Troy Brouwer. The club also needs to set aside some space to resign restricted free agent, Jaden Schwartz.

The Florida Panthers also announced that they have signed forward Conner Brickley and goaltender Sam Brittain to one-year, two-way contracts.

Brickley, 24, played 23 games with the Panthers this past season, while scoring five points. In 45 games with the Cats’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Portland Pirates, he scored 12 goals and 15 assists, while adding another assist in five postseason games.

The six foot three, 203-pound native of Everett, Massachusetts was the Panthers second round pick, number 50 overall, in the 2010 NHL Draft.

The 24-year Brittain played in 25 games with the Pirates during this past season. He put up an 8-10-3 record with a 2.79 goals against average and .906 save percentage.

The six foot three, 226-pound native of Calgary, Alberta was drafted by Florida in the fourth round of the 2010 draft.

The Pittsburgh Penguins also announced that they resigned defenseman, Tim Erixon to a one-year, two-way deal.

The 25-year-old Erixon only played in the AHL, with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins during the past season. In 65 games with the Baby Penguins, he scored 3 goals and 17 assists. While adding two more goals and four assists during their 10 playoff games.

The former first round pick of the Calgary Flames, Erixon made his way to the Penguins as part of the deal that brought them Phil Kessel, from the Toronto Maple Leafs, last summer. Erixon has also been a part of the New York Rangers, Chicago Blackhawks and Columbus Blue Jackets.
