Calgary Flames Sign Matthew Tkachuk to Three Year Entry Level Contract

The Calgary Flames announced on Thursday that they signed their 2016 first round draft pick, Matthew Tkachuk, to a three-year entry level contract. 

This past season, Tkachuk helped the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League capture the Memorial Cup. He put up five goals in four games during the OHL Finals, including the game winning goal in the clincher.

The left-winger was fifth in the league in scoring with 107 points in 57 games. He also had a league best 20 goals in 18 games during the OHL Playoffs. 

The six foot two, 200-pound forward was ranked number two, on NHL Central Scouting’s ranking amongst North American skaters prior to the draft. 

Tkachuk, the sixth overall pick in the 2016 National Hockey League Draft, which was held at the First Niagara Center, in Buffalo, New York is the son of former NHL Hall of Famer, Keith Tkachuk.   

The 18-year-old, Scottsdale, Arizona native captained the United States to a bronze medal during the 2016 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship, while scoring 11 points in seven games. He also added a pair of gold medals during the 2015 IIHF Under-18 and 2014 IIHF Under-17 World Championships.
