The Detroit Red Wings and defenseman Danny DeKeyser agreed
to a six year, 30 million-dollar contract on Tuesday avoiding an arbitration
hearing.
DeKeyser was scheduled to have his hearing on Thursday. The
26-year-old put up eight goals and 12 assists from the blue line during the
2015-2016 campaign. In the Stanley Cup Playoffs, he was able to add an assist
in the Red Wings first round, series against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
DeKeyser told the Detroit
Free Press, “It is a big deal for me, to be able to get some stability and be
able to play in Detroit for the next six years, at least. It is a place I like
to play. My family is here. I do not want to go anywhere else.”
In 234 National Hockey League games, the Detroit native has
put up 14 goals and 61 assists. He originally signed with the Red Wings as an
undrafted free agent on March 29, 2013. The Western Michigan University product
played in five postseason games, during the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
He also helped the Red Wings American Hockey League
affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins capture the Calder Cup during the 2013 AHL
Playoffs.
He added, “It is nice
to get this done and to know that I will be around for a while. My fiancée, she
is also from Michigan, and it is just a good spot for us to be in. It is really
cool how all of this has worked out.”
The Red Wings still have to reach an agreement with
goaltender Petr Mrazek, who has his team elected arbitration hearing scheduled
for Wednesday in Toronto.
