New York Rangers Deal Derick Brassard to Ottawa Senators for Mika Zibanejad

The New York Rangers traded Derick Brassard to the Ottawa Senators for Mika Zibanejad on Monday. 

Brassard, 28, led the Blueshirts with 27 goals last season, a career high. He also led the team with eight power play goals. He 58 points on the season, was second on the team. In the Rangers five Stanley Cup Playoff games he added four points. 

Since the Rangers acquired Brassard on April 3, 2013 in a trade with the Columbus Blue Jackets, his 69 goals are second to Rick Nash’s 91 tallies. Only Derek Stepan (187) and Mats Zuccarello (176) have more points than his 174. 

Brassard has played the most games for the Rangers, 254, during those three seasons.  

The Blue Jackets drafted Brassard with the sixth pick during the 2006 NHL Draft. In 563 games between New York and Columbus, he has scored 127 goals and 216 assists. He has added 18 goals and 26 assists in 59 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

Brassard has three years left on his contract, with an average annual value of about five million-dollars per season. 

Zibanejad, 23, had a career best, 21 goals and 30 assists during the 2015-2016 NHL campaign. He won about 50.4 percent of his draws during the season. 

Along with Calgary Flames center, Sean Monahan, the two were the only players 22-years or younger to score 20 or more goals and win at least 50 percent of their faceoffs. 

In five seasons in the Canadian capital, Zibanejad has put up 64 goals and 87 assists, in 281 games. Ottawa selected him with the sixth pick in the 2011 NHL Draft. 

As part of the deal the Rangers will also get a second round pick in the 2018 NHL Draft, while the Senators will receive a seventh round selection in 2018.
