Alex Pietrangelo to Become 21st Captain in St. Louis Blues History




The St. Louis Blues will announce at a press conference scheduled for Thursday afternoon that defenseman, Alex Pietrangelo will become the 21st captain in team history.

The Blues will make the announcement that Pietrangelo will replace David Backes as captain at the Scottrade Center at 2:00 PM Central Time, on Thursday. Backes who served as the Blues captain, since 2011, left St. Louis, after signing a five year, 30 million-dollar contract with the Boston Bruins this summer.

Pietrangelo becomes the 21st team captain and 10th defenseman to wear the “C” for the Blues since Eric Brewer wore it from 2008 to 2011. He was selected by the Blues with the number four pick in the 2008 National Hockey League Entry Draft. 

In 459 regular season games, the 26-year-old blue liner, has scored 51 goals and 204 assists. During the 2011-2012 NHL season, he finished fourth in the Norris Trophy voting as he put up 12 goals and 39 assists. 

This past season he found the back of the net seven times and picked up the helpers on 30 more, in 73 games for the Blues. He also helped St. Louis advance to the Western Conference Finals, before the team succumbed to the San Jose Sharks in six games. 

Pietrangelo will represent Team Canada during the World Cup of Hockey next month in Toronto. 

The King City, Ontario native also helped Canada capture the gold at the 2014 Sochi Olympics and represented his country during the 2009 International Ice Hockey Federation World Championship. 

Blues general manager, Doug Armstrong and head coach, Ken Hitchcock will also be in attendance at the press conference.
