Montreal Canadiens and Andrew Shaw Reach Agreement on Six Year Contract

The Montreal Canadiens signed Andrew Shaw to a six-year deal, worth 3.9 million dollars per year, on Monday. 

The Candiens acquired the rights to Shaw on Friday during the 2016 National Hockey League Entry Draft from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for two second round picks during the draft. 

Canadiens general manager, Marc Bergevin said, “We are very pleased to have agreed to a long term deal with Andrew Shaw. As I mentioned last Friday following his acquisition, we are adding a solid character player to our team, a reliable player who plays with grit and a two time Stanley Cup Champion with the Chicago Blackhawks over the past five seasons. Andrew will add more leadership to our team. I had the opportunity to discuss with him over the past few days, and I sense his determination and excitement in joining the Canadiens’ organization for many years to come.”  

Shaw was selected by the Blackhawks in the fifth round, number 139 overall during the 2011 NHL Draft. In 78 games this past season, he scored 14 goals and 20 assists, with a plus-11 rating. In the six postseason games for the Blackhawks, Shaw led the team with four goals. 

Shaw’s career stats include, 70 goals and 67 assists in 322 NHL regular season games. He also has 300 penalty minutes. 

During the draft, the Canadiens also sent Lars Eller to the Washington Capitals for a second round pick in the 2017 and 2018 NHL Entry Drafts. 

Had the Canadiens and Shaw not reached an agreement before Friday, July 1^st, he could have become a restricted free agent.
