The Buffalo Sabres signed 2016 first round draft pick,
Alexander Nylander to a three-year, entry-level contract on Friday.
Nylander, 18, was chosen by the Sabres in the first round,
eighth overall of 2016 National Hockey League Draft held at the First Niagara
Center in Buffalo, New York on June 24.
Sabres general manager, Tim Murray said, “We are extremely pleased to sign Alex to his
entry-level deal. When we selected Alex, we obviously knew he was a talented
skilled player. We look forward to him coming to training camp and competing
for a job.”
This past season, the six foot one, 178-pound forward played
for the Mississauga Steelheads of the Ontario Hockey League, where he put up 28
goals and 47 assists in 57 games. His 75 points led the Steelheads on the season.
In six OHL playoff games, he added six goals and six
assists. Nylander won the OHL and the Canadian Hockey League rookie of the year
awards last season as well.
Born in Calgary, Alberta, Nylander has dual Canadian and
Swedish citizenship. Nylander will be able to get a bit of NHL sibling rivalry
as his brother William is a part of the Toronto Maple Leafs organization.
William was the eighth overall pick in the 2014 NHL Draft.
Both brothers stem from good hockey genes, as their father,
Michael played in the NHL for 15 seasons between 1992 and 2009, with the
Hartford Whalers, Calgary Flames, Tampa Bay Lightning, Chicago Blackhawks, Washington
Capitals, Boston Bruins and New York Rangers.
In addition to the announcement of Nylander signing his
entry-level contract, the Sabres announced that they had made some additions to
the coaching staff. Adding assistant coach Tom Ward and video coach, Adam
Nightingale.
