New Jersey Devils Sign Defenseman Brandon Gormley to One Year Contract

The New Jersey Devils helped bolster their defensive depth on Thursday when they signed defenseman Brandon Gormley to a one-year, two-way 650,000-dollar contract. 

Gormley, 24, was originally drafted by the Arizona Coyotes in the first round, with the 13^th overall pick of the 2010 National Hockey League Entry Draft. 

This past season, he split his time between the Colorado Avalanche and their American Hockey League affiliate the San Antonio Rampage. He became an unrestricted free agent this summer, when the Avalanche decided not to give him his qualifying offer. 

In 58 NHL games, he has scored two goals and three assists on 54 shots. When training camp begins this fall, Gormley will compete for a spot in New Jersey’s to six defensemen. 

After being selected by the Coyotes, the Murray River, Prince Edward Island native spent three seasons with the organization, before being shipped to Colorado on September 9, 2015. The six foot two, 192-pound blue liner, won the Quebec Major Junior League with Moncton Wildcats in 2010 and the 2012 Memorial Cup Championship with Shawinigan Cataractes. 

In four seasons between the Wildcats and the Cataractes, he scored 39 goals and 111 assists in 202 games. Gormley was named to the QMJHL All-Rookie Team following the 2008-2009 season. He won the Mike Bossy Trophy, for best professional prospect in the 2009-2010 season. 

In 2009-2010 and 2010-2011, he was named to the QMJHL Second All-Star Team and was named to the 2012 Canadian Hockey League Memorial Cup All-Star Team. 

At the 2012 under-20 World Junior Championship, he was named to the tournament’s All-Star Team and was voted as a top three player on his squad. He was awarded the award for the Best Defenseman, as he helped Team Canada win a bronze medal.
