The Pittsburgh Penguins announced on Wednesday that they
resigned defenseman Justin Schultz for another season.
The 26-year-old unrestricted free agent, agreed to a
one-year, 1.4 million-dollar deal with the defending Stanley Cup Champions. In
15 Stanley Cup Playoff games this past season, Schultz put up four assists for
the Penguins, including one in game six of the Stanley Cup Final, helping them
capture the Stanley Cup over the San Jose Sharks, that night.
The Penguins acquired Schultz from the Edmonton Oilers, on
February 27 in exchange for a third round draft pick in the 2016 National
Hockey League Draft. He put up one goal and seven assists, with a plus-7 rating
in 18 games during the 2015-2016 season.
Drafted in the second round, 43rd overall by the
Anaheim Ducks in the 2008 NHL Draft, but was unable to agree on a contract. He
became a free agent following three seasons at the University of Wisconsin, and
signed with the Oilers, in 2012.
In 266 regular seasons between the Oilers and Penguins, he
has scored 29 goals and 80 assists. During his rookie season, in 2012-2013, he
scored eight goals and 19 assists. He registered his first NHL goal in his
second career game.
