The Las Vegas National Hockey League franchise has narrowed
their list of nicknames down from 18 names to four, the Las Vegas Review Journal reported on Friday.
Team owner, Bill Foley said, “We are making progress. We are in a pretty good position now, and we
are meeting next week with the NHL and Adidas to look at logo and designs. We
will have a little more clarity in the next 30 days.”
Foley did not divulge the list of names that they are down
to, as he is waiting to release the information at same time as the jersey and
logo unveiling, sometime in September or October. Shortly after the organization
announces what the team will be called, they will make the merchandise
available for sale.
He added, “We want to
make it a special event for everyone. I know everyone is anxious about the
name. But we want to get it right.”
Foley did tell the Las
Vegas Review Journal, that the name Knights, continues to remain an option
for the organization, but the London Knights, of the Ontario Hockey League, owns
the rights to the nickname throughout Canada.
He added, “The London
Knights own the name in Canada and to acquire the name from London is not
economically feasible. In the US, ‘Knights’ are fine. But we can’t use it in
Canada.”
The NHL awarded Las Vegas the franchise on June 22, to begin
play during the 2017-2018 season. George McPhee was named as the team’s first general
manager on July 13.
McPhee starting to fill out his front office staff on
Tuesday, naming Kelly McCrimmon, as Assistant General Manager, Wil Nichol, as
Director of Player Development on Thursday and Katy Boettinger, as Director of
Hockey Administration on Friday.
The first sheet of ice was installed in the new T-Mobile
Arena, on July 30. As the calendar turned to August, the team welcomed over
5,000 fans to the arena for a sneak preview of what they will experience when
the puck drops in 2017.
