Scott Wedgewood followed up becoming the first New Jersey
Devils goaltender since Martin Brodeur to record a victory in his National Hockey
League debut last Sunday, by shutting out the Pittsburgh Penguins in his second
career start Thursday night.
The Penguins tested Wedgewood early in the game but he was
able to stand tall and turn away all 39 shots thrown at him. Wedgewood’s most
impressive stop of night came about 24 seconds into the middle frame as he
denied a point blank shot by Sidney Crosby, as he skated in three-on-one,
preserving the Devils 2-0 lead.
Wedgewood made his NHL debut last Sunday at home against the
Columbus Blue Jackets after being called up from the Albany Devils of the
American Hockey League, while Devils number one goalie Cory Schneider has been
recovering from an MCL strain and backup netminder Keith Kinkaid was struggling
getting thrown into playing every night.
In just two starts Wedgewood has turned away 66 of the 67
shots he has faced. According to Elias Sports, his 39 saves against the
Penguins were the most by a Devils goalie in his first shutout.
Wedgewood said, “I am
super happy, super stoked for the way it is going right now and obviously I do
not want to get too high or too low at any point throughout the year, but right
now it is feeling good. I am feeling super confident in my game and the guys
around me are making it very easy to play at this level.”
Since losing 6-1 to these same Penguins at home on March 6th,
the Devils have gone 5-2-0, to sit six points out of the final wildcard spot
with eight games to play.
