Florida Panthers Resign Jaromir Jagr

The Florida Panthers Executive Vice President and General Manager, Dale Tallon announced on Thursday that they have reached an agreement to bring Jaromir Jagr back for another season.

The 44-year old winger led the Panthers with 66 points during the 2015-2016 season, while recording two assists in the Panthers first round series against the New York Islanders.

During this past season, Jagr passed Mr. Hockey, Gordie Howe for third place on the all-time National Hockey League points list with 1,850. He also passed Brett Hull for third in goals with 741.
The six foot three, 220 pound 22-year veteran from Kladno in the Czech Republic became the sixth players in NHL history to reach 1,100 points, the fifth to score 200 postseason points and the 10th to play in 1,600 NHL games during this past season.

Jagr served as the captain for the Atlantic Division team during the 2016 NHL All Star Game in Nashville, Tennessee. It was he 10th all star selection of his NHL career. He is also a finalist for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, which is awarded to the player that best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.

In 1.629 NHL games with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Washington Capitals, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, Dallas Stars, Boston Bruins, New Jersey Devils and the Panthers, he scored 1,868 points. Between 1992 and 2008, Jagr managed to have 15 straight 70 point seasons, which is an NHL record.

Before only putting up 35 points in the lockout shortened, 2012-2013 season, he recorded 18 straight with 50 or more points. After eclipsing the 50-point mark in 203-2014 season, when he put up 67 with the Devils, he surpassed it again, for the 20th time in his career this past season.

Tallon said, “Jaromir is a Hall of Famer and had an excellent season playing alongside Aleksander Barkov and Jonathan Huberdeau. His track record speaks for itself, ranking third all time in points and goals. He has been a great fit with our organization and we are excited to have him back for next season.”

Panthers coach Gerard Gallant added, “Jaromir has had a tremendous influence on our younger players and has been a key offensive contributor on our team. We are happy to have him back as we look forward to build off this year’s playoff appearance.”

Jagr was originally drafted by the Penguins in the 1990 NHL Entry Draft, as the fifth overall selection. He won back-to-back Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992. In 208 NHL playoff games, he has scored 78 goals and 123 assists for 201 points.

On the international stage, Jagr has represented the Czech Republic in five Winter Olympics, capturing the gold in 1998 and a bronze in 2006. He has also represented his country at two World Cup of Hockey tournaments, 10 World Championships, the 1991 Canada Cup and the 1990 World Juniors Tournament.

Jagr and Jiri Slegr are the only Czech born players to win an Olympic Gold Medal, a gold in the World Championships and a Stanley Cup.
