The Florida Panthers announced on Thursday that they have
traded forward Rocco Grimaldi to the Colorado Avalanche for goaltender Reto
Berra.
The 23-year-old Grimaldi was the Panthers second round pick,
33rd overall in the 2011 National Hockey League Draft. This past
season he played in 20 games for the Cats, scoring three goals and two assists.
The Anaheim, California native dressed for two of the Panthers postseason games
this past season.
Most of the season for Grimaldi, was spent with the Portland
Pirates of the American Hockey League as he notched, 16 goals and 17 assists
for 33 points in 52 games. Grimaldi made his debut with Florida during the 2014-2015
NHL season. He scored one goal in seven games.
Prior to going pro, he played for the University of North
Dakota. In two seasons at North Dakota, he scored 31 goals and 46 assists, in
86 games. He led the team his sophomore year with 39 points in 42 games.
On the international level, Grimaldi helped lead Team USA to
a gold medal at the 2013 International Ice Hockey Federation World
Championships in Russia. He netted two goals, including the game winner in the
finals against Sweden.
He also represented Team USA during their gold medal
winning, 2010 and 2011 IIHF Under-18 World Championships.
Berra, 29, posted a 5-8-0 record in 14 games for the
Avalanche this past season. He put up a goals against average of 2.41 and a .922
save percentage. In 16 games with the San Antonio Rampage, the Avalanche’s AHL
affiliate, he had a record of 7-7-0 with a 3.39 GAA and .901 save percentage.
The six foot four, 210-pound native of Bulach, Switzerland,
has gone 19-30-4 with a 2.82 GAA and .906 save percentage, with three shutouts in
64 NHL games for the Avalanche and the Calgary Flames.
Berra was originally selected by the St. Louis Blues in the
fourth round, 106th overall, of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.
