The New Jersey Devils avoided arbitration with New Jersey
native Kyle Palmieri as they reached an agreement on a five-year deal, worth
23.25 million-dollars.
Palmieri led the Devils with 57 points on the season last
year and was tied for the lead in goals with 30. Both totals were career bests
for the Montvale, New Jersey native.
The Devils acquired Palmieri in a trade with the Anaheim
Ducks, during the 2015 National Hockey League Entry Draft at the BB&T
Center in Sunrise, Florida.
In six seasons in the
NHL, he has scored 73 goals and 73 assists in 280 games between the Devils and
the Ducks. In 33 playoff games he has added seven goals and five assists.
While born in Smithtown, New York he grew up in Montvale and
became just the second New Jersey native to skate for the Devils. Brick, New
Jersey native, Jim Down was the first.
Palmieri was selected by the Ducks with their first pick, 26th
overall in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. The new contract carries an average annual
value of 4.65 million-dollars.
The Devils still have 13 million dollars of salary cap
space, with just Reid Boucher as the only free agent left to resign. By
reaching the agreement with the team, the 25-year-old forward, who was the only
Devils restricted free agent to file for salary arbitration, was able to avoid
arbitration.
