The Carolina Hurricanes announced on Wednesday that they
extended the contract of head coach, Bill Peters for two more seasons.
Peters helped guide the Hurricanes to a 15-point improvement
in his second season behind the bench for Carolina. The 86 points in the
standings, during the 2015-2016 season was the most for the Hurricanes since
2010-2011.
Carolina finished 10 points behind the Philadelphia Flyers,
just missing out of the second wildcard, for the final playoff spot last
season. This past summer, the 51-year-old coach, led Team Canada to the 2016
International Ice Hockey Federation World Championship and will be an assistant
coach on the 2016 Canadian World Cup squad, later this fall.
Hurricanes general manager, Ron Francis said, “Bill is a talented, young coach in the
National Hockey League. We are happy that he has made a commitment to the
Hurricanes and that he will be a major part of the team continuing to grow.”
In two seasons behind the Carolina bench, he has guided the
team to a 65-72-27 record.
At the press conference announcing the extension, Peters
said, “I liked the direction we are
headed in, and we are headed in that direction for a long time.”
With the extension, the Hurricanes get to keep Peters under
contract until the end of the 2018-2019 NHL season.
