The Arizona Coyotes announced late Monday night that they
have resigned longtime forward Shane Doan to a one-year deal.
Doan, 40, led the Coyotes in goals with 28, while putting up
47 points in 72 games, this past season.
He was drafted by the organization in the first round, seventh
overall, in the 1995 National Hockey League Entry Draft, back when they were
still the Winnipeg Jets.
In 1,466 regular season games, the NHL’s longest serving
captain has scored 396 goals and 549 assists, with 1,305 penalty minutes. He
also added 15 goals and 13 assists in 55 Stanley Cup Playoff games.
Doan is the franchise leader in games played, goals and
points. He also holds the franchise record in power play goals, with 125.
The 2016-2017 NHL season will mark his 21st with
the organization. The Coyotes named Doan their captain prior to the start of
the 2003-2004 season. The face of the Coyotes has spent his entire 20-year career
with the organization.
Doan is also credited in having played a huge role in the
team signing free agent defenseman, Alex Goligoski, pretty much selling him on
the attributes of the team and community. During the 2004-2005 lockout, he has been
given credit as being one of the key voices that brought the NHL and NHL
Players Association together helping to reach an agreement.
