The Florida Panthers solidified their blue line on Saturday as
they reached an agreement with defenseman, Jason Demers on a five-year, 22.5
million-dollar contract.
The Panthers who recently trade for, and resigned Keith
Yandle, as well as extended Aaron Ekblad for another eight seasons, should be a
good defensive team for many years to come.
Panthers’ general manager, Tom Rowe said, “We are excited to sign Jason and we are
thrilled that he chose Florida. He will play an integral role on our blue line and
will help our transition game and special teams. This is another important
signing for us this offseason.”
This past season, Demers played an important role in the
Dallas Stars success during the year. He finished the 2015-2016 campaign with a
career best seven goals and 16 assists and a plus-16 rating.
With 20:52 of ice time during the year, he played in just
about every situation for the Stars. Demers missed thirteen days of the season,
after injuring his shoulder on March 8 in a game against the Montreal Canadiens,
returning to action for the regular season finale.
He played in all 13 of the Stars postseason games, but
unfortunately was not able to return to his form from before the injury. He
only put up three points during the playoffs, all assists. His ice time dropped
during the playoffs as he averaged about 1:40 per game after the injury.
In 423 career games, he has scored 28 goals and 115 assists.
He is an efficient and quick puck mover, that likes to join the rush, which is
a tremendous skill in today’s National Hockey League.
The 28-year-old defenseman, brings valuable leadership, as
well as being a mobile, good passer with hard shot, that is willing to take the
body when needed.
